Throughout history, people used a powder made from the bark of willow trees to treat a fever. We now know the bark contains salicylic acid. Aspirin is a man-made variety of this same thing. It was first made in France in 1853, but it was 40 more years before it was available to the public. In 1893, a young German working for Bayer, made it to try to help his father's arthritis. Bayer quickly put it on the market as a pain killer. Today, it is the most widely used medication in the world.

I just read in the paper the other day that aspirin stops the recurrence of a certain type of colon cancer. (I'm just full of odd bits of information...)
